WPD Pharmaceuticals wins funding to fight cancer

Feb 16, 2018

WPD Pharmaceuticals is a new Polish biotech/pharma company with USA know-how in drug discovery and development. Their first project on novel drugs against glioblastoma (WPD101, "Rozwój nowego leku stosowanego w terapii glejaka wielopostaciowego", #POIR.01.01.01-00-0912/17) has just won 33 M PLN funding from the EU Smart Growth Programme through the National Centre for Research and Development "Fast Track" call 5/1.1.1/2017 for SMEs. Glioblastoma multiforme is one of the most malicious forms of solid brain tumors with very poor prognosis for patient survival, and the new drug would be a great chance for treatment of this type of cancer. The project will include drug production, validation, preclinical trials and importantly also early-phase clinical trials, which are planned to be executed in a Polish hospital. Further similarly exciting projects for cancer drug development are under evaluation for funding.

Congratulations to the excellent team at WPD Pharmaceuticals!

Several researchers from our group - Prof. Krzysztof Woźniak, Dr Maria Górna and Dr Marcin Ziemniak - are involved in this project as local collaborators and experts, and the first stages of laboratory work will be performed in our laboratories at the University of Warsaw Biological and Chemical Research Centre. We are looking forward to the collaboration and sharing our resources with researchers from WPD Pharmaceuticals.

We wish everybody involved all the best luck in finding a cure!
